This white paper discusses the high rates of road traffic accidents (RTA) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and identifies several gaps in the country’s current process of dealing with resulting injuries. While a recent reduction in RTAs suggest the Kingdom is working towards better road safety measures, the paper suggests not only focusing on providing prompt medical care and financial assistance to those affected by RTAs, but also promoting road safety awareness campaigns. The discussion presents examples of robust systems to tackle RTA injuries in four countries, where injury hospitalisation and death rates are relatively low compared with countries without such schemes. The examples include successful outcomes in Australia, South Africa, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom.
